One thousand fans turned out in 40-degree weather on
May 1 for Opening Day at the Fairgrounds, with many of them watching the
game from carriages parked around the edge of the playing field. They got
to see what they had hoped for: the Brown Stockings pounded the Troy
Trojans 13–1 to win their first game as a major league team. The victory
was especially sweet because Troy had been the only National League club
